Atchison is a historic city located in the northwest corner of the state of Kansas. Founded in 1854, Atchison was the first city located west of the Missouri River. The city grew rapidly and became an important stop on the Underground Railroad as well as a hub for various stagecoach and wagon trails. Today, Atchison is a charming small town with a population of just over 10,000. The town's Victorian-era architecture and scenic location along the Missouri River make it a popular destination for tourists.


Warnock Lake

This lake surrounded by lush green meadows is truly a picturesque sight in town. It is a great place to spend a day out with your family and friends. You can indulge in outdoor activities like fishing and no-wake boating here. Additionally, this place also accommodates a campground, playgrounds and walking trails around it. Moreover, a beautiful arboretum and memorial garden is easily accessible from here. It is nice spot to enjoy a day picnic in Atchison.

Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum

Take a tour of the birthplace of an aviation legend when in Atchison, Kansas. Earhart’s childhood home is located in Amelia Earhart Historic District, a fascinating place that shows the architectural masterpieces of the early settlers in the region. Evah C. Cray Historical Home Museum

A 25 room refurbished mansion of the Victorian era - the Evah C. Cray Historical Home Museum is located in the heart of Atchison. It has a coveted spot on the National Register of Historic Places. Take a tour of this three-storied house museum and catch a glimpse of the grandeur and charm of the 19th century. With elegant fireplaces, beautifully carved wooden furniture, lavish furnishings, and luxurious chandeliers adorning the house, this beautiful estate makes for an interesting visit for architecture geeks and design lovers. Do not miss out on the gift shop in the carriage house.

Atchison County Historical Society Museum

Atchison County Historical Society Museum, established in 1967, opened its doors to the public only a year later. It is an interesting stopover for visitors to learn about the local history. With artifacts denoting the timeline of events that took place during the formation of the government, the exhibits give a better perspective and knowledge on the firm belief in the land and the people that made Atchison a county by itself. Events are held throughout the year to keep the spirit alive and to reignite the feeling of belonging among the dwellers of the land.

The Sallie House

A visit to The Sallie House is mandatory if you're in Atchison, Kansas. Initially rented by a doctor for his family, it is believed that a 6-year-old girl named Sallie passed away during a surgery conducted within the house. After this unfortunate incident, there seemed to be a paranormal presence which attacked the future tenants of the property, particularly men. In the present day, this haunted property is available for daytime visits and overnight stays. It's a bone-chilling experience which many thrill seekers will enjoy.

International Forest of Friendship

International Forest of Friendship is an arboretum and memorial garden established in the memory of the aviation geniuses and space explorers from around the world. Located next to the Warnock Lake, the trees here represent the 50 American states and 35 countries, these brave souls hailed from. Some interesting ones among these are the Bicentennial American Spruce from George Washington’s Mount Vernon plantation, a tree from Amelia Earhart’s grandfather’s farm, the moon tree which is an American sycamore grown from a seed taken to the moon by pilot Stuart Roosa in Apollo 14, and many more. A walk through this popular park is a wonderful way to know more about aviation, space and the brilliant personalities associated with it.

Muchnic Art Gallery

Based in a beautiful Victorian mansion, Muchnic Art Gallery is a place dedicated for promoting art through education, exhibits and outreach. The gallery is managed by Atchison Art Association while the house is maintained by the Muchnic Foundation. It is a beautiful place with parquet floors, stained glass windows and two large wooden stairs. Though, most of the house is not furnished in the present day, this venue is a host to rotating exhibitions on regular basis. Also, tours of this impressive property are offered by knowledgeable docents. Visiting this gallery is a great way to get a glimpse of art and culture in Atchison.

Amelia Earhart Memorial Bridge

Spanning the Missouri River, Amelia Earhart Memorial Bridge connects Atchison to Buchanan County in Missouri. This four lane bridge was opened to public in the year 2012 replacing the previous 70-year-old two lane truss bridge. The current bridge has been decorated with beautiful LED lights which can be programmed according to the occasion. It is an impressive structure standing tall over the Missouri river.

1889 McInteer Villa

Built in the late 19th Century for an Irish businessman, McInteer Vila is a historic house in Atchison. This Victorian-style property has changed hands numerous times over the years and is available for day tours and overnight stays for visitors. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, in the present day, this site is said to be prone to paranormal activities.

Jackson Park

Initially known as the City Park, Jackson Park was founded in the early 20th century. Named after a local and a public official who led its development, it occupies more than 100 acres (404686 square meters) of land in the present day. Visitors can find picnic areas, playgrounds, walking trails, and more around this beautiful place. Come here with your family and friends to enjoy a day picnic in a lovely natural setting by the Missouri river.

Atchison State Fishing Lake

A popular fishing ground for more than five decades, Atchison State Fishing Lake is a great choice for a weekend outing. Fishing being the major activity carried here, this place is also used for camping and picnicking. It has fishing piers, fish feeders, and a boat ramp and dock too. The commonly found fishes in this lake are channel cat and bluegill but other spices like largemouth bass, black crappie, redear sunfish and walleye are found in large numbers too. This 66-acre (267093 square meters) area is a great recreational spot for outdoorsy people.

Atchison Rail Museum

This museum based next to the Santa Fe depot boasts outdoor displays of vintage rail cars. These include a Baldwin locomotive, a Santa Fe Caboose, Missouri Pacific Snow Plough, many passenger cars and more. A brochure explaining these amazing exhibits can be found in the Atchison Historical Museum and Visitor Center. Owned and operated by the Northeast Kansas Railroad Inc., this lovely museum is worth a visit.
