Punxsutawney was named after the legend of a groundhog who steps out of his burrow on February 2nd each year. If it is cloudy, he will leave the burrow signifying that winter's on its way out, but if it's sunny, and he sees his own shadow, he will retreat back causing people to believe that winter will be extended for another six weeks. The town was immortalized in Hollywood's history with the release of the Bill Murray film, Groundhog Day which was based on this legend.
