While many big cities claim to be the center of the universe, the presence of this world-renowned space laboratory may help to bolster Pasadena's claim on the title. This 177-acre site, owned and operated by NASA, has been used as the nerve center for just about every significant space exploration mission over the past 25 years. Whenever a mission goes up, Jet Propulsion Laboratory comes alive with activity and excitement, as we saw during the successful 1998 Mars Pathfinder mission. If you want to see JPL reserve a spot on a guided tour or visit during one of their numerous special events for space enthusiasts.

What started as a random collection of vintage street lamps turned into an iconic landmark within a short period. Chris Burden is the creative brainchild behind the unique installation that graces the premises of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. It is an assemblage of over 200 street lights dating back to the 1920s that were sources of light to neighborhoods across Southern California. Linearly aligned and refurbished to maintain uniformity, the cast iron beams boast intricate geometric patterns at their base and are topped with solar-powered luminary globes.
