A discovery made in 1952 by two college lads, has turned into Rapids City's popular attraction, Cosmos Mystery Area. If you happen to pass by Interstate 90, the humungous bronze statue of McDonald’s Quarter Pounder burger is likely to catch your eye. Rising to a height of nine feet, this statue was built to commemorate the decadent Quarter Pounder burger which has been served at McDonald’s for over 50 years. The statue is constructed on a granite pedestal and the phrase “hot and deliciously juicy” has been carved in Latin, signifying a feature that makes it one of the most liked fast-food items among the locals in the city. The statue is sculpted by a Utah-based sculptor, Raymond Gibby, and almost took 1800 hours to erect. Several passersby often halt at the spot to grab a picture with the ginormous burger.

Lincoln Borglum Museum is located within Mount Rushmore National Memorial. The museum consists of two theaters of 125 seats each which features a thirteen minute movie about the history and construction of Mount Rushmore. The museum also has an amphitheater which features a thirty minute show on Mount Rushmore and the history behind it. Another major attraction is the Grandview terrace and the Presidential Trail which starts from the terrace. The trail goes through the Penderosa Pine forest to the Sculptors Studio which has on display the tools used for the construction. The museum is one of the major tourist attractions in the city.

Mystic was a very important part of South Dakota ever since the discovery of gold, and a massive gold mining industry was setup there. Establishment of railway lines and lumber mills further improved its status as an advanced town. Sadly, after World War 2, this settlement went into decline and is now a ghost town, its overgrown trees and abandoned mines inspiring awe and wonder among those who wander near the Black Hills.
