Debido a su arquitectura fascinante y su grandeza total, la Catedral de San Pedro y San Pablo es un sitio imperdible si visitan Filadelfia. Esta catedral preciosa es uno de los puntos de referencia de una de las poblaciones católicas más numerosas del país. Fue diseñada por el célebre arquitecto Napoleo LeBrun y construida entre 1846 y 1864 con una mezcla de influencias paladinas e italianas. Con una superficie de más de 3.723 hectáreas y compuesto por un total de 63 parques, el Parque Fairmont es uno de los sistemas de parques de ciudad más grandes del país. El Museo Please Touch es una parada importante de todo itinerario. Hagan música con los pies usando el famoso "Walking Piano" (un enorme piano ubicado directamente en el suelo que se toca pisando las teclas), conozcan a los personajes de "Alicia en el país de las maravillas", crucen los ríos de una selva tropical y manejen una máquina de vuelo. Participen de las distintas actividades y charlas especializadas sobre diversos temas, desde la historia hasta las ciencias, y aprendan al tiempo que se divierten. Pasen por el "Please Taste Café" y asistan a un espectáculo de títeres o de música folclórica en el teatro. El carrusel de madera es una atracción muy popular entre los más chicos, así como también lo es el Baile de Cuentos, que cada año muestra una temática distinta y en el que los personajes de sus historias favoritas cobran vida.
El Museo Afroamericano es famoso por preservar y analizar cuidadosamente el patrimonio pictórico y material cultural de los afroamericanos. Tras muchísimos años y con mucho esfuerzo, el museo logró acumular unos 5 objetos en resina, imágenes, documentos, vestidos, fotos y libros sobre los nativos. Los principales eventos que se celebraron en las instalaciones fueron Celebrate Africa 2008!, Discover Greatness, AAMP Art y Quilter's Roundtable. Generalmente los sábados encontrarán un Family Day en el que los más pequeños saldrán con la cara pintada y podrán disfrutar de la hora del cuento, bailes coreografiados y películas. Los artistas locales se ponen sus bellas obras basadas en la vida de los animadores, los políticos y los luchadores por la libertad.
Indian King Tavern, also known as Creighton House or Creighton Tavern, is a colonial structure built around 1750. The historical building is of political significance as it is the site where New Jersey transitioned from being a colony into a state. The tavern is also significant for being the site of many important political meetings, including the 1777 New Jersey Assembly that ratified the Declaration of Independence. Restored into a museum, it features antique furniture from the 18th Century, along with other artifacts used by the settlers.
The Hadrosaurus Foulki Site is an archaeological site in Haddonfield. In 1838, the first almost-complete set of dinosaur bones was discovered at this site, drawing researchers and curious visitors to the town from all over the world. Excavated by William Parker Foulke, the dinosaur came to be named as Hadrosaurus foulkii. Today a designated National Historic Landmark, the Hadrosaurus Foulki Site makes for an educational visit where visitors can learn more about the dinosaur and the fascinating excavations.
See the humble surroundings that gave rise to one of the most famous First Ladies in US history. Other than being known as the only First Lady to be burned out of the White House in 1814, Dolly Madison became legendary for her reputation as a magnificent diplomatic hostess and decorator. His modest, circa 1775 colonial home was once the home of Dolley Payne Todd, who acquired greater fame as First Lady Dolley Madison. Tickets are required but are free from the Visitor's Center.
Since 1979, the Horticultural Center has augmented the variety of its botanical life by collecting seeds from Asia, Europe, and the West Indies. Permanent and seasonal plantings display over 2,000 examples of flora. The center is located in Fairmount Park. On the grounds there is a Shofuzo-a reproduction of a 17th-Century Japanese middle-class house and Japanese garden. A donation of $1 is suggested.
The construction of the significant Pennsylvania State Official Building was done from 1957 through 1958. It comprehensively encompasses a land area of 1.9 acres (0.77 hectares). The structure of the building exemplifies the modern movement style of architecture. The building towers 18 floors high and is a steel frame construct with reinforced concrete. The historical building stands listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The William Penn Landing Site is the place where William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania first landed. The site is marked by a granite monument and has been added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.
The Hatfield House was formerly a boarding school that was known as Catherine Mallon's Boarding School. Erected in 1760, this historical home was incorporated in the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
Heritage Glass Museum established in 1979 is a historic glass museum. It is built to promote the glass manufacturing industry and it houses old glass bottles, tools of workers from the glass factories, fruit jars, historical and Figural Flasks and other hand blown glass items. The museum will present you with the transition that came about in the glass manufacturing industry and also explain about the process of making glassware. Visit the place to know about what era each of their glassware belonged to with a piece of information on the local culture. Group tours of 8 people or more can be scheduled 2 weeks in advance by emailing the museum. Well-behaved pets are welcome to the museum.
