The Ouray County Museum was established by the Ouray County Historical society 1971 on the site of St. Joeseph's Miners' Hospital. The museum building itself is a treasured piece of local history, originally built in 1887 and run by the Sisters of Mercy as a hospital for the treatment and care of injured miners. Despite hard times and financial constraints, the hospital continued to care for the injured and ailing until 1964. The museum traces the history of mining, ranching and railroading in Ouray. Their collection of exhibits include artifacts from the early days of Ouray, including Native American crafts, medical equipment, minerals and period room displays. Spread over three floors, there is plenty to explore at the Ouray County Museum.
