Set up as a memorial to the Donner party stranded in the mountains during the winter of 1846–47, the park today caters to nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts. It consists of the Emigrant Trail Museum featuring Donner party artifacts and many other sites of historical interest including the Pioneer Monument and the Murphy family cabin site. Guided nature walks are also offered. The adjacent area boasts hiking trails, a beach, biking trails and fishing zones.
Commons Beach Park is a large grassy area with playgrounds, BBQ areas, and rock-climbing facilities. Although the water isn't ideal for swimming, the beach features a nice sandy stretch for visitors to picnic and sunbathe. In summer, the beach famously hosts the Common Beach Concert Series and free movie nights on its grounds.
This beautiful building is a reconstruction of the gatekeeper's cabin, which served as a residence for the dam attendant at Lake Tahoe. As you walk through the exhibits, you will see displays about the pioneers, the area's natural history and authentic old photographs. Also on display is a beautiful collection of Native American baskets and artifacts. There are picnic tables on the park grounds adjacent to the museum.

Since it began in 1969, this marvelous orchestra has provided some of the best entertainment in northern Nevada and beyond. Performances are held mainly at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Reno. During the summer season, enjoy outdoor concerts at the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival and "Pops on the River" at Wingfield Park. Conductor Barry Jekowsky was previously Associate Conductor of the National Symphony in Washington, D.C. The Philharmonic has performed with internationally known guests such as George Shearing, Luciano Pavarotti and Ray Charles. The orchestra offers many programs for children including the Discover Music Program, the Instrument Petting Zoo and the Reno Philharmonic Youth Orchestra.
