Set in the valleys of western North Carolina, Nantahala National Forest was officially established in 1920. The largest of the four national forests of North Carolina, it lies in the Cherokee County and stretches over a huge expanse of land. Divided in three districts, namely the Highland Ranger District, the Tusquitee Ranger District and the Cheoah Ranger District, this place is maintained by the United States Forest Service. This forest is home to several exotic flora and fauna, apart from the beautiful landscape comprising the Nantahala River and its surrounding area that is replete with beautiful trails meandering through lush green blankets and picturesque waterfalls.

Filled with folklore, Tuckaleechee Caverns are famous for its onyx carvings. Opened to the public in 1953, the mile (1.61 kilometers) long tunnel was discovered by European settlers in 1850, though the natives knew about it for a long time. The Big Room which was found in 1954 by members of the National Speleological Society is in the middle of the cave system. It is the largest known cave room in East America and has 24 feet (7.32 meters) long stalagmites. The Silver Falls is a 200-feet (60.96 meters) double waterfall of which only the lower section is fully accessible.
The Pendergrass Building is among the oldest structures in the city. Built in 1904 as a commercial building, it was a retail store till 1975. Due to the historic significance of its architecture, it is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Macon County Historical Society and Museum is set in this heritage building. Get to know about local history, trivia and more through the artifacts displayed and the stories narrated by the museum curator. Donations are recommended of at least 5 USD.
