Fort Scott National Historic Site commemorates an important frontier military post that operated from 1842 to 1853. The fort was located in the Indian Territory, in what is now southeastern Kansas. It was an important base of operations for the United States Army during the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War.


Fort Scott National Historic Site

Established in 1842, Fort Scot is a historic site managed by the United States National Park Service. Named in honor of General Winfield Scott, the fort is mainly associated with the American Civil War and Bleeding Kansas conflict. In 1965, the city government, aided by the National Park Service restored the fort. Having served as a military base during the war, the historic site is home to 20 protected structures that visitors can see including, parade grounds, visitor center, and several exhibits pertaining to the site's history.

Gunn Park

Surrounded by pristine nature, Gunn Park in Fort Scott is a wonderful attraction. Spanning over 155 acres of stunning terrain, the park includes two beautiful lakes and scenic biking trails. It is an excellent recreation park quipped like shelter houses, a campground with electric hookups and water, a nine-hole Disc golf course. Whether you are looking for a relaxed fishing day or a wonderful hiking trail, Gunn Park is a great spot in the town.

Gordon Parks Museum

Visit the temple of Gordon Parks - a celebrated African-American photographer, filmmaker, writer, and musician. Located on the campus of the community college of Fort Scott, Gordon Parks Museum is a wonderful space dedicated to highlighting the remarkable life and work of the legend. Visit the museum to see some of his remarkable works, valuable collections such as awards and medals, personal photos, paintings, and other prized possessions. Open for tours, Gordon Park Museum is a must-visit.

Lake Fort Scott

Fort Scott Lake is a beautiful attraction that is truly immaculate. The pristine location is well-equipped for perfect fishing retreats that are popular amongst the locals. Spread over 352 acres, the lake has several docks and shorelines ideal for recreational boating and fishing. The lake also features campsite and picnic spots perfect for a fun day out with family. The lake also serves as a site for annual sailboat races. Overnight camping on the lakeside is permitted.

Rock Creek Waterfall

Rock Creek Waterfall in Fort Scott is truly a hidden gem. This beautiful waterfall is the park of Rock Creek Lake, nestled in the lush green woods of the town. It is a great stop with wonderful sceneries, best visited in the rains. Created by an overflow of the lake, visitors can see three-tiered waterfalls with vertical drops.
