The quixotic environmental crusader and Austrian architect Hundertwasser left his mark in the Frankfurt am Main area with three architectural projects, the largest of which is Darmstadt’s Waldspirale (Forest Spiral). A residential complex completed in 2000 shortly after Hundertwasser’s death, it features 105 coveted apartments and 1000 windows of varying shapes and sizes. Like the mini herb spirals found in many German gardens, the Waldspirale’s floors wind around and dwindle in surface area to its highest height of 37.69 m. Built from layers of recycled concrete painted blue, sandy and rosy hues, it embodies many of Hundertwasser’s cherished concepts— no straight lines, “tree tenants” or trees sharing the apartment, ceramic tiles à la Klimt, onion-shaped turrets. Though tours are not available, one can see this astonishing landmark from the street and marvel at its architectural detailing.
