Royal Pharmaceutical Society Museum is managed by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and was founded in 1842. The museum aims at portraying the history of medicines and that of the British pharmacy. They have on display drug storage containers, medical caricatures, a photo archive and almost 10,000 artifacts of crude drugs, slides etc. The museum is used for research purposes and they aim in convincing the importance of pharmaceuticals and the evolution of the industry over the ages.
Hampton Court Maze, designed for William III by Henry Wise and George London, in 1690, is a part of the Wilderness Garden at the palace. The existing maze constitutes yews whereas the original featured hornbeams. Interestingly, evidence suggests that the current maze, which is already pretty old, is built on an even older labyrinth produced for Henry VIII. This feature of the Hampton Court Palace draws quite a bit of attention, especially, from the younger visitors. Drop in, and get lost (quite literally) in the delightful old hedge-maze which is now with sound effects!
The Anaesthesia Heritage Centre, managed by the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland, consists of humungous resources on the subject and is used for research purposes. The Anaesthesia Museum housed within this center consists of various artifacts from the field, the oldest object being a resuscitation set from the late 1700s. The center is open for all but a prior appointment before visiting would be preferred.
A really wicked museum, The Viktor Wynd Museum of Curiosities, Fine Art & Natural History is definitely worth visiting. A weird and wonderful collection of hairballs, Fiji mermaids and an extensive art collection comprises of the museum’s exhibits and artifacts. There is also a collection of tribal art, fossils and medical instruments on display here.
Bethlem Museum of the Mind is located in Beckenham and focuses on displaying the history of Bethlem Royal Hospital. The gallery inside the museum showcases various pieces of artwork designed by the current and former patients of the hospital. The museum holds records of the hospital dating back to as far as the 16th century and has an extensive art and artifacts collection taken from the hospital. They have garnered some great reviews and has won many accolades.
