Describing Grainger Market as a "bombardier of the nostrils" might sound a tad off. If you pay it a visit, however, you'll see that it's both true and flattering. With more food stores than its neighboring Greenmarket, Grainger Market has delicacies to cater to everyone's palette. Look one way and you'll find meat, fruit, confectionery, and all the trimmings, while the other way you've got a pharmacy, a hardware store, a bookshop, and a video games retailer. It would be only a slight exaggeration to say that you could find almost anything you need in this huge and varied market.

Regarded as the center of Newcastle, Eldon Square offers a superb selection of retail outlets under one roof. The choice of shops is excellent, ranging from top national names like Boots, and Argos to lesser known local and specialist outlets. Information points are available and there are plenty of seating areas when a rest is required, and a variety of cafes and pubs to provide refreshment. Or if you prefer a more energetic option, Eldon Leisure is a fully-equipped leisure and fitness facility. The mall can be exceptionally busy at weekends, but the crowds aren't a problem provided you relax and concentrate on browsing and buying from any of the hundreds of stores around the center.
Part of the John Lewis chain, this flagship department store has operated in the Eldon Square Shopping Centre since 1976. The store, however, has existed in some form since 1838, and may have been the world's first true department store. With over 80 departments spread over four floors, John Lewis concentrates on quality merchandise allied to helpful, expert service. Their motto: "Never knowingly undersold" holds good and price matching is common. Export sales are welcomed: interpreters and advisory staff are available if required, and the shop is experienced in overcoming the possible pitfalls of shipping goods to foreign parts. John Lewis is spacious, easy to navigate, with uniformed sales assistants just about everywhere. A pleasant, if somewhat muted shopping experience. If you need to relax, or reassess your finances, you can choose to refresh yourself in either the restaurant, or the coffee shop.
It is Newcastle's branch of one of the north's leading independent jewelry chains, Inglis and Sons. In business for over a century, Berry's has been deemed by experts as one of the world's leading jewelers, watch specialists and Swiss watch manufacturers. Berry's purchases diamonds from Tel Aviv and color stones from quality gem stone dealers. Diamonds are graded by color, clarity, cut and carat. Among their range of high-quality watches are names such as Gucci, Jaeger Le-Coultre, Patek Phillippe, Rotary and Cartier. The store has a workshop which will undertake almost any task involving jewelry. There is also a department for valuation and insurance, approved by the UK's leading insurance companies.
This is certainly an offbeat store, with a range of floaty Gothic and colorful fabrics, and dresses that would certainly not have looked out of place in the 1960s. The shop has a stock of old hemp magazines and a lot of paraphernalia and literature to do with the inhalation of marijuana and related substances. Pipes and hookahs can be purchased. A small, but interesting retail outlet.
