Carved into the sandstone cliffs of the desert canyons and mountain sides of southwest Jordan, the prehistoric city of Petra was hidden away for hundreds of years from the reach of the western world. This World Heritage Site was named one of the New Wonders of the World in 2007, a rare jewel of rock-cut architecture and evidence of the Nabataeans' ingenuity. Capital of the Nabataean Empire between 400 BCE and 106 CE, the temples and tombs of Petra are carved directly into the rock amid a dramatic landscape of rugged cliffs and barren ravines, a once thriving center of trade and commerce. The Roman conquest of the Nabataean Empire marks the beginning of Petra's decline, yet evidence of additions made by the Romans stand to this date amid the distinctive style of the Greek, Byzantine and Nabataean periods. A sprawling complex of ruins, what has been uncovered makes up a mere 15 percent of the vast city, the rest remains hidden away, buried by the elements and lost in time.

Tra gli edifici più importanti che costeggiano il pittoresco lungofiume vi sono l'HSBC Building, che un tempo ospitava la sede centrale di Shanghai dell'omonima banca, il russo-cinese Bank Building, l'Asia Building, l'edificio della Bank of China e la Gutzlaff Signal Tower. Mentre alcuni edifici hanno ancora oggi una funzione ufficiale, altri formano centri culturali e commerciali in questa zona dedicata al commercio.

Esteso su un'area enorme, questo antico complesso di templi è uno dei più imponenti al mondo. L'architettura di Angkor Wat riflette i tradizionali disegni ornamentali e classici. Il tempio ha cinque bellissime torri con cupole a forma di loto, tutte artisticamente scolpite con modelli di apsaras. Conosciuto anche come Tempio della Città, è dedicato al dio indù Vishnu. Se siete interessati alla storia, questo luogo merita una visita per la sua profonda rilevanza storica in relazione alle antiche dinastie. Vale la pena visitare questo tempio anche solo per rilassarsi nel suo ambiente sereno. Visitate il tempio intorno alle 5 del mattino e portate con voi un picnic da gustare mentre ammirate la magnifica vista del sole che sorge sul tempio.

The Valle dei Templi or The Valley of the Temples actually refers to a number of temples that are situated in the ridge between the highway and the city. The temples are supposed to have originated since the ancient Roman era. The onlookers are awed by the tall standing structured spruced over the ridge. Besides temples, there are several museums around that give information on these temples. Magnifico, stupefacente, ammaliante, sublime: le parole non bastano per descrivere questo emozionante prova d'amore che sorge sulla riva meridionale del fiume Yamuna. Uno degli esempi più stupefacenti di architettura Moghul, il Taj Mahal è avvolto in un’aura splendente di bianco avorio, uno splendido esempio di precisione e simmetria. Costruito dall'imperatore Shah Jahan affranto dal dolore dopo la morte dell'amata consorte, è difficile credere che il gigantesco edificio sia in realtà un mausoleo che ospita le tombe di entrambi. L'iconica struttura fu costruita interamente in marmo e presenta opere d'arte eccezionali tra cui gli splendidi intarsi in marmo intrecciati con pietre preziose e semipreziose. Le iscrizioni calligrafiche del Sacro Corano circondano le bellissime arcate a volta. L'edificio, circondato da quattro pilastri, fu costruito in perfetta simmetria e appare identico da tutti i lati. Al centro assoluto del monumento si trova il cenotafio di Mumtaz Mahal e, accanto al suo, quello dell'imperatore Shah Jahan, aggiunto successivamente. L'edificio fu dichiarato patrimonio dell'umanità dall'UNESCO nel 1983 ed è uno dei monumenti più riconosciuti a livello mondiale.

Rising 390 feet (120 meters) above the blue waters of the Atlantic, the Cliffs of Moher (or Mohair) are truly majestic. Carved out of sandstone and suspended between the ocean and sky, the vertical cliffs capture nature's raw energy and untamed spirit. Named for the old Moher fort that once stood on the southern end of the cliffs, this ancient rock face overlooks the Twelve Pins and Maumturks mountain ranges, Galway Bay dotted with the Aran Islands, and Loop Head. Every year when the great Nile flooded the golden soils of Egypt, Pharaoh Khufu hired several unemployed civilians to contribute to the construction of this mystical structure, a persevering effort that lasted nearly two decades. Appearing to worship the mighty skies, this colossal pyramid rises from the ground to meet its apex at 147 meters (481 feet), and is deemed to be the tallest structure in the world to be built by human hands. While the pyramid is composed of three known chambers, it was originally intended to serve as a tomb for the reigning emperor. The Great Pyramid continues to shine mysteriously under the gaze of the unforgiving sun, a glorious form built of three million limestone blocks, and years of plentiful toil.

A sea of pillars in shades of ochre and red stretch as far as the eye can see in Bryce Canyon. Called hoodoos, these pillars are shaped by eons of wind and water erosion into intriguing shapes that defy logic. The most spectacular formations are located in the Bryce Amphitheater; its castles, steep pink cliffs and towering pillars an expression of nature's stark beauty. At dawn and sunset the amphitheater is awash in a prism of warm hues.
