This is not simply a piazza, but the very heart of Trieste: its lounge, its soul, its business center, as well as the commercial and political center. Very busy of course during the week , it plays an important role on Sunday mornings when thousands of people descend on this large European piazza that overlooks the sea. Here, they drink coffee, meet friends, colleagues and acquaintances, all in a very unique atmosphere. The piazza also accommodates many concerts, festivals, shows and exhibitions. Shaped in a perfect rectangle and surrounded by amazing palaces: the Municipio with its clock tower; the Stratti, housing General Insurance and also the Caffè degli Specchi and the Palazzo del Lloyd Trestino, which once housed the oldest Italian navigation company. Finally there is also the Prefettura or government palace and the lovely Art Nouveau building that houses the fine Duca d'Aosta hotel. And at the piazza's center stands the 18th'century Quattro Continenti fountain, the former terminal of the Maria Teresa d'Austria aqueduct. It would be a grave sin to visit Trieste and not have a coffee in this lovely piazza.

Since the end of the 19th Century this beautiful cake shop has been a point of reference for locals and tourists alike. In this small shop not far from the central Piazza San Antonio, everything is very quaint, from the wooden decor to the hand operated till. The window is full of typical sweetmeats, but what you must not miss are the extraordinary baskets of wild strawberries and cream or the insurmountable and very delicate meringues with cream. We challenge anyone to say "I didn't enjoy this". Prices slightly above average but this shop is truly a sugar boutique.
This elegant two-story mall (the first in the city's history) is situated on the outskirts, just a stone's throw away from the Boschetto of Trieste, the so-called copse. Even the youngest in Trieste know all about it: one can spend a pleasant afternoon shopping or meeting with friends to the sound of soft background music. Not only does Il Giulia offer a variety of shops and pubs, but you can also meet with a travel agent, or visit the stationer's newsagent and tobacconist. Enjoy a gelato or swing by a fast food restaurant. You will not even be disappointed with the selection of goods, although they can sometimes be a little on the pricey side. The services do not stop here; dance the night away at "la Jack in the box," which is popular disco. Enjoy the competitions and lotteries with prizes ranging from holidays to cars. The mall also has a civic center and a savings bank, the only bank to open on Saturdays. Weekends are particularly busy as shoppers come over from Slovenia and Croatia. To keep kids busy, there is a brightly colored children's play area that is equipped with a slide, swing, and other games. Pay garage is available.
Scout is a fresh shop in Trieste. Close to Piazza Sant'Antonio, in a pleasant area, this shop is divided with two entrances – one for men and one for women. Scout is ideal for young people who want to always dress a bit differently, following their fashion choice of the moment, without spending too much. For men you can find colorful shirts or T-shirts, shorts or jeans, shoes and hats, all different colors with funny images or sayings. Women go crazy trying to see how many different things they can find at Scout. There are also fantastic objects to buy as presents, for example: puzzle frames for your pictures or fun clocks to put on the wall.
Paul and Shark belongs to a big chain of shops selling sportswear linked to sailing. The items are of good quality and well made in classic sailing colors- navy blue, red, white and yellow, practically sized but always elegant. Clothing is comfortable and youthful but you cant help bringing to mind, sailing club dinners or stories of courageous captains and sailors. But it wont do any harm to have them, especially when the weather gets colder.
It is worth visiting this shop just to see the enormous quantity of goods that you could buy. The owners are very helpful and can point out where you should look for the objects you require. They sell knickknacks and various other interesting objects at various prices, and of varying quality. It is also a good place to come for modern second hand books because you can often find relatively new books at a very low price here. You can buy and sell here, but do not expect them to give you a lot of money for your old teapot as they then will have to sell it to someone else.
This is a perfect place to purchase a gastronomic souvenir of Italy. Along the central, chaotic Via Battista, this elegant shop offers extraordinary delights straight from the oven. It sells homemade savory pies, made with spinach, eggs and other flavors, gnocchi, and other local and national specialties. Sophisticated atmosphere and kind, professional staff. You will not be disappointed.

The boutique is nestled in the heart of città vecchia (old town), in a small but unconventional setting; as you look in the window you’ll be captured by the originality of the color-coordination and the dress shapes. If you like vintage and similar trappings you should not pass by Retròbottega!
